Okay it's a Marrow!

Every year Sawrey has it's Marrow show - a lot of locals get involved, and grow massive specimens! There is a lot of leg pulling and rivalry surrounding the event which features marrows sometimes over 100lbs! Then they are thrown away. You can make a sort of Rum from them by filling the marrow with sugar and hanging it in a pair of old tights until it starts to rot, then draining the liquid and it should be marrow rum. I tried it one year and it wasn't.

The thing is with cooking a marrow is that they give up their liquid when cooking and I have found that by making a lentil mixture and stuffing it into a marrow that it retains it's shape, and the flavour is great.

Ingredients
A small marrow
brown/green lentils
large onion
red pepper
carrot
garlic
a few eggs
lots of cheese
olive oil

Cut the marrow as above and using a spoon remove the seeds and insides till you are down to the flesh.
Fry your chopped pepper, chopped carrot and add onions and garlic and fry until clear, simmer the lentils with a bay leaf or two for about 15mins, drain. Beat eggs add onions mixtues, lentils, loads of cheese, seasoning.

Stuff Marrow and put the lid back on and wrap in tin foil. Bake in the oven till you think it's cooked.
