Durban Lamb Curry Recipe and Mutton Bunny Chow

Durban Lamb Curry

Okay this curry needs quite a few ingredients, but then this curry is one of the few that you will make again and again. Hot and tomatoey it's favourite of mine but then lamb stew is too. I also make a Durban Chicken Curry click here.

Durban is the largest Indian city outside of India, Indians were shipped over as laborers to South Africa from the 1800's to work on sugarcane plantations. This group recreated curries they loved from home but slightly differently. This fusion of Indian, Malay and Dutch style of cooking is known as Cape Dutch or Cape Malay.

Bunny Chow - Durban Street Food

Durban lamb curry is also served like the above picture as Bunny Chow, so 'bunaai' was a not pleasant slang name for an immigrant Indian, and they were fed outside restaurants or cafes and the bowls and cutlery went missing, so the cafe owners began to serve curries inside hollowed out bread, with the bread that was taken out placed on top, this was handed out on newspaper. A quarter bunny is a quarter loaf.

This curry is usually served with a south African style salad as pic.
